Summary
This editorial introduces a special section of *IEEE Access* dedicated to 5G and beyond mobile wireless communications enabling intelligent mobility. Motivated by rapid urbanization and the vision of a society in motion, the paper addresses the need for pervasive, ubiquitous connectivity for both static users and moving transportation vehicles. Intelligent mobility requires connected vehicles equipped with sensors, computing units, and IP-based connectivity to support efficient vehicular applications. The section compiles twenty-three peer-reviewed contributions focusing on theoretical and experimental enhancements to 5G technologies, incorporating data analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and cloud computing. The reviewed articles are categorized into four themes: vehicular, railway, aircraft, and emerging communications. In vehicular communications, studies address millimeter-wave (mmWave) beam selection using machine learning for situational awareness, non-stationary vehicle-to-vehicle channel modeling with velocity variations, and vehicle-to-pedestrian channel characteristics. Research also covers routing protocols for vehicle platoons, groupcast schemes for vehicle-to-vehicle networks, and the dynamic multiplexing of enhanced mobile broadband and ultra-reliable low-latency communication traffic. Additionally, vehicular edge computing is explored through traffic prediction models using Deep Belief Networks and Hidden Markov Models, as well as joint optimization of computation offloading and task scheduling. Railway communication studies focus on overcoming vehicle penetration loss through frequency selective surfaces and repeaters, analyzing propagation characteristics in tunnel scenarios at 1.4 and 40 GHz, and investigating mmWave MIMO channel performance in tunnels. High-speed railway scenarios are examined via Cloud Radio Access Network resource migration and group handover strategies. Aircraft communications address disaster management using deep-learning-based TCP for 5G mmWave networks and optimal Unmanned Aerial Vehicle deployment methods for coverage maximization. Emerging communications include ensemble learning for indoor-outdoor classification based on LTE Key Performance Indicators, peak-to-average power ratio reduction for multicarrier modulation in transportation, and performance analysis of directional modulation with finite-quantized phase shifters. Security in wireless-powered two-way relay networks, quadrature index modulation with 3-D constellations, and seamless handover schemes for 5G heterogeneous networks are also covered. Finally, the section reviews cell-free massive MIMO systems, diffuse scattering models at mmWave frequencies, and spatial consistency models for geometry-based stochastic channels. The editorial concludes by highlighting the collective contribution of these works to the knowledge base of intelligent mobility systems.
