Scope
Recommendations for daytime and night-time lighting of road tunnels and underpasses, framed around enabling the driver to perform the visual task by ensuring sufficient object visibility. Addresses the threshold, transition, interior and exit zones and the adaptation problem drivers face entering and leaving a tunnel (the 'black-hole' effect and dark/light adaptation), plus how lighting must track fluctuations in external daylight and respond to power failure. Replaces CIE 088-1990; a revision of the 2004 edition is in preparation.
