Scope
A summary of credible empirical evidence on how changes in road and area lighting affect the visual impressions and visual performance of pedestrians, intended to inform lighting-standard development. Driver-relevant because pedestrian visibility and conspicuity under road lighting bear directly on a driver's ability to detect vulnerable road users at night, a dominant factor in night-time pedestrian crashes.
