Participants performed trials with and without the provision of this information, which was displayed on an 8-inch monitor using color-coded symbols (green triangle for acceleration, red for deceleration, white bar for neutral). Fuel consumption was calculated using a fuel injection model based on accelerator pedal input and engine speed. The results demonstrated that providing pre-preceding vehicle information significantly improved driving behavior and fuel efficiency during starts. Specifically, fuel consumption improved by 6.3% when information was provided. Drivers exhibited a 23.3% reduction in starting delay (the time lag between the preceding vehicle’s start and their own), a 20.8% increase in creep driving time (using engine braking to move slowly before accelerating), and a 7.5% decrease in accelerator pedal input during starts. These changes indicate smoother, more gradual acceleration consistent with eco-driving practices. Additionally, drivers tended to finish acceleration at speeds more harmonized with the preceding vehicle, reducing the speed differential from 4.6 km/h to 2.9 km/h above the preceding vehicle’s speed. Subjective evaluations also showed that 7 out of 11 participants felt that following the preceding vehicle was easier when the information was provided. The study concludes that providing acceleration and deceleration information from the pre-preceding vehicle is effective in promoting eco-driving behaviors, particularly during vehicle starts. By enabling drivers to anticipate traffic flow further ahead, the information facilitates smoother acceleration, reduces fuel consumption, and enhances coordination with preceding vehicles. The findings suggest that such information provision can be a valuable tool in cooperative ITS applications for improving traffic flow stability and reducing environmental impact. Future research is recommended to validate these effects in diverse traffic conditions and with larger vehicle groups.
