Two conditions were manipulated to vary discrimination difficulty: one condition used semantically related distractors (e.g., other animals when the target was an animal), creating high discrimination difficulty, while the other used semantically unrelated distractors (e.g., objects or plants), creating low discrimination difficulty. The procedure included two phases: a preview phase where a subset of items was displayed for 1.5 seconds, followed by a search phase where the remaining items appeared alongside the previewed ones for 1 second. Participants were instructed to detect a specific target among the items. Reaction times were analyzed using a four-way ANOVA with factors including preview condition (preview vs. no-preview), discrimination difficulty (easy vs. hard), target type, and set size. The results confirmed the presence of the preview effect in both discrimination conditions. Statistical analysis revealed significant main effects for the preview condition in both the easy discrimination group (F(1, 12) = 10.17, p < .01) and the hard discrimination group (F(1, 12) = 16.63, p < .01). This indicates that reaction times were significantly faster in the preview condition compared to the no-preview condition, regardless of how difficult it was to distinguish the target from distractors. Additionally, the study verified that discrimination difficulty itself significantly impacted performance, with harder discriminations resulting in slower reaction times (F(1, 12) = 37.05, p < .01). However, the interaction between preview and discrimination difficulty did not negate the benefit of the preview; the inhibitory mechanism successfully facilitated search even when semantic similarity made target identification challenging. The findings suggest that the inhibitory mechanisms underlying the preview effect are robust and operate independently of the semantic difficulty of the search task. This implies that the brain's ability to suppress previously seen items is not contingent on the ease of distinguishing those items from potential targets. The study contributes to the understanding of attentional networks by demonstrating that semantic inhibition can effectively support visual search efficiency even under conditions of high perceptual or semantic ambiguity.
