To isolate top-down effects from bottom-up sensory inputs, the researchers compared neural activity during periods where visual stimuli were identical. Task engagement was assessed by comparing theta power (3–6 Hz) during fixation cross presentations between task and no-task conditions. Task demands were compared by analyzing theta power during identical action clips while children prepared for either color naming or imitation. Data were analyzed using cluster-based permutation tests, with the theta band defined specifically for this age group. The results demonstrated that theta power was significantly higher when children were engaged in a task compared to when they were not, particularly over frontomedial sites. This indicates that theta oscillations in preschoolers are sensitive to the presence of a cognitive goal. Furthermore, theta power increased over time during sustained task engagement, suggesting a buildup of top-down control as attention and encoding demands persisted. Regarding specific task demands, theta power was stronger over left fronto-temporal sites during the language-related Color-naming Task compared to the action-related Imitation Task. This topographical difference suggests that theta oscillations are modulated by the specific cognitive networks recruited for different types of top-down control. These findings extend the neurocognitive framework of theta oscillations to early childhood, providing evidence that frontal theta reflects top-down control processes in 4-year-olds, not just bottom-up attention. The study confirms that despite the immaturity of frontal brain regions, preschoolers utilize theta oscillations to guide attention and working memory toward task-relevant information. The sensitivity of theta power to both general task engagement and specific cognitive demands supports the view that theta oscillations play a unifying role in coordinating diverse cognitive processes in developing brains, mirroring mechanisms observed in adults.
