Scope

Specifies the type-approval requirements that make new M and N category vehicles ready for the later fitment of an alcohol interlock — a device that prevents a driver with a blood-alcohol concentration above a set limit from starting the vehicle. Requires a standardised installation document conforming to European Standard EN 50436-7:2016, with diagrams and the software/hardware/procedures needed to install an interlock in a standard vehicle. Applies from 6 July 2022 (new types) and 6 July 2024 (all new vehicles). Addresses the driver-behaviour problem of alcohol impairment.
