This qualitative study investigates train driver instructors’ perceptions of in-cab technology, addressing the research questions of which systems are deemed most helpful and what themes characterize the relationship between driving and technology. The research was motivated by the evolution of train cabs into complex environments containing a "patchwork" of legacy and modern safety systems. The study employed five online focus groups with 19 train driver instructors from a single UK operator. Participants, who possessed extensive experience with both older and newer rolling stock, completed a two-part prioritization exercise to rank the three most and least helpful safety features. This was followed by open discussions regarding safety support, design, and gaps. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis, involving open, axial, and selective coding to identify overarching themes from the transcripts. Results from the prioritization exercise identified the Automatic Warning System (AWS), Vigilance, Driver Reminder Appliance (DRA), and Train Protection Warning System (TPWS) as the most helpful systems. However, these same systems were also frequently cited as least helpful due to issues with distraction and utility. For instance, the Vigilance system was criticized for causing drivers to miss other alerts or fostering automatic, non-attentive responses. Three key themes emerged: "The patchwork cab," describing the disjointed integration of overlapping technologies; "eyes, ears, and staying aware in the cab," highlighting challenges with distraction and situational awareness; and "balancing alerts and silence," reflecting workload dynamics. Notably, more than half of the participants could not identify any system as least helpful, suggesting a normalization of current distractions. The study concludes that while in-cab technology is essential for safety, the current approach of adding new features to legacy systems has reached a saturation point. This "patchwork" design fails to effectively support driver decision-making and normalizes acknowledged distractions rather than designing them out. The authors argue that the industry must shift from merely adding technologies to redesigning integrated systems that better align with human factors and the actual work performed by drivers, ensuring humans and machines function as effective teammates.
