With eyes open, accident-prone drivers frequently displayed Type O patterns, where alpha waves remained largely uninhibited, while safe drivers predominantly showed Type N patterns, where alpha waves disappeared upon opening the eyes. Crucially, during actual driving, 9 of the 15 accident-prone drivers exhibited "frequent" alpha waves, indicating a relaxed or abstracted mental state, compared to only 1 of the 12 safe drivers. Conversely, safe drivers more often showed "few" alpha waves during driving, suggesting higher levels of mental engagement. The authors conclude that the persistence of alpha waves during driving and at rest with eyes open correlates with a lowered level of consciousness or arousal, similar to states of fatigue or early hypoxia. In contrast, the suppression of alpha waves in safe drivers indicates a higher, more alert conscious level appropriate for the demands of driving.
