Scope

Industry safety guideline establishing four basic principles and specific requirements for the design, installation, information content, and operation of in-vehicle visual display/navigation systems so they minimize adverse effects on safe driving. Applies to display systems (factory- or dealer-installed) located in a position visible from the driver in vehicles other than motorcycles. Covers display location so forward-field visibility and driving operation are not obstructed (downward viewing angle, no night dazzle), restriction of information types that distract from driving (e.g. entertainment), and the conditions under which functions may be operated while the vehicle is in motion. Version 3.0 (August 18, 2004) introduced numerical judgment criteria for display-system operation while a vehicle is moving, evaluated via an occlusion-based surrogate method.
