This study investigates the relationship between physical and mental workload and job fatigue among Maxim car drivers in Kupang City, Indonesia. The research was motivated by the rapid growth of online transportation services, particularly Maxim, which offers low fares that drive high demand. This economic pressure compels drivers to work long hours, often exceeding eight hours per day, to meet income targets. Preliminary surveys indicated that this extended working duration significantly contributes to driver fatigue, a critical factor that threatens road safety and increases the risk of accidents. The study aims to determine whether physical or mental workload is the primary driver of this fatigue. The researchers employed a quantitative analytic survey method with a cross-sectional design. The study population consisted of 430 Maxim car drivers in Kupang City, from which a sample of 81 respondents was selected using accidental sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and observations, focusing on three main variables: physical workload, mental workload, and job fatigue. The data were processed using SPSS software and analyzed descriptively and bivariately using the chi-square test to determine statistical relationships between the variables. The findings revealed that the majority of respondents, 85.2% (69 drivers), experienced severe job fatigue. In terms of workload, 58.0% (47 drivers) reported light physical workload, while the majority experienced high mental workload, with 35.8% (29 drivers) reporting high levels and 32.1% (26 drivers) reporting very high levels. Statistical analysis showed no significant relationship between physical workload and job fatigue (p-value = 0.860). However, a significant relationship was found between mental workload and job fatigue (p-value = 0.037). This indicates that mental stress, rather than physical exertion, is the significant predictor of fatigue in this group. The study concludes that mental workload is significantly associated with job fatigue among Maxim car drivers in Kupang City, whereas physical workload is not. The high prevalence of fatigue is linked to the psychological pressures of the job, such as uncertain working hours and the need to maximize earnings through extended shifts. The authors recommend that drivers arrange more efficient work schedules to mitigate fatigue. Additionally, they suggest that transportation companies like Maxim should provide counseling services to help drivers manage mental stress. These interventions are crucial for improving driver well-being and reducing the risk of traffic accidents caused by fatigue.
