The researchers conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 2,398 motor vehicle crashes recorded by police offices over one Iranian year (March 2009–March 2010). Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the dataset. The findings reveal that human factors were the primary cause of crashes, accounting for 90% of incidents. Specific human errors included disregarding traffic laws (49.1%), speeding (19.3%), and sleep deprivation or fatigue (5.3%). Collisions with other vehicles or objects constituted the majority of crash types (62.4%), while non-collision events like rollovers accounted for 33.8%. Demographically, 99% of drivers were male, with 83% aged between 15 and 45 years. Crashes predominantly occurred during daylight hours (76% between 08:00 and 20:00) and on sunny days (94%). Infrastructure issues were prevalent, with 93% of crashes occurring on two-way, undivided roads and 41% involving narrow road widths. Vehicle safety was low; only 6% of vehicles had anti-lock braking systems, and 41% of drivers were not wearing seat belts. One-third of crashes resulted in injury (25%) or death (5%). The study concludes that reckless driving behaviors, particularly speeding and traffic law violations, are the dominant risk factors for crashes in this region, disproportionately affecting young adult males. The authors emphasize that current vehicle safety standards and road infrastructure in the province are inadequate. They recommend a combined approach of targeted education for high-risk demographics and stricter enforcement of traffic laws to reduce crashes. Additionally, improvements in road design and vehicle safety standards are necessary to mitigate the high burden of road traffic injuries in South-East Iran.
