Statistical significance was defined as p < .05, and CIRs were only reported for samples of 20 or more drivers. The results indicate that young drivers were significantly more likely to have contributing factors in fatal crashes than 35-year-old drivers, with risk remaining elevated even at ages 19 and 20. Three specific situations were identified as particularly hazardous for young drivers. First, young drivers were significantly more likely to have contributing factors on two-lane roadways compared to 35-year-olds, whereas this elevated risk on roadways with three or more lanes was only significant for 20-year-olds. Second, young drivers faced increased risk in environments with no traffic control and at stop signs, particularly for 17- and 18-year-olds; no increased risk was found at traffic signals. Third, young drivers were at highest risk when the initial impact occurred on the right side of their vehicle, especially for those aged 17–19. This suggests that maneuvers resulting in right-side impacts, such as left turns, are particularly risky for this demographic. The study concludes that two-lane roadways, intersections with stop signs, and situations leading to right-side impacts represent heightened risks for young novice drivers. These findings provide actionable data for parents, driver educators, and policymakers to tailor supervised practice and educational materials. By focusing training on these specific hazardous scenarios, stakeholders can better prepare young drivers for the challenges they face on the road, potentially reducing fatal crash involvement among this vulnerable population.
