Do Crashes and near Crashes in Simulator-Based Training Enhance Novice Drivers’ Visual Search for Latent Hazards?

The authors developed and evaluated SimRAPT (Simulator-based Risk Awareness and Perception Training), a low-cost, fixed-base simulator intervention designed to improve detection of "covert" latent hazards—hidden threats that may materialize without warning. Participants were randomly assigned to either the SimRAPT group (n=18) or a control group (n=18) that received placebo pen-and-paper training on traffic signs. The SimRAPT training involved 10 scenarios on a driver training simulator (DTS), where participants drove hazard anticipation scenarios in three phases: a hazard detection drive, an error drive where the hazard materialized aggressively, and an improvement drive. Following the error drive, participants received instruction videos with plan views and voiceovers explaining the hazard and appropriate gaze directions. Post-training evaluation occurred on a separate advanced driving simulator (ADS) using a Mobile Eye eye-tracking system. The evaluation drive included 19 embedded hazardous scenarios: seven near transfer and twelve far transfer. Eye movements were scored by two blind experimenters who determined if participants fixated on critical target areas within defined "launch zones" to anticipate hazards. Results indicated that the SimRAPT group significantly outperformed the control group in anticipating latent hazards. In near transfer scenarios, trained drivers fixated the hazardous region 84% of the time, compared to 57% for untrained drivers. This difference was statistically significant with a large effect size (U = 63.00, p < .01, r = −.53). In far transfer scenarios, trained drivers fixated the hazardous region 71% of the time, compared to 53% for untrained drivers. This difference was also significant but with a medium effect size (U = 88.00, p < .05, r = −.39). The internal consistency of the hazard anticipation measure was high (Cronbach’s α = .83). The findings demonstrate that simulator-based training incorporating error learning (experiencing crashes/near crashes) effectively enhances novice drivers’ ability to scan for latent hazards, with stronger effects in near transfer than far transfer. This suggests that such training can improve anticipatory visual search, a key factor in crash prevention for young drivers, and supports the use of low-cost simulators for targeted hazard perception education.
