Safety-Relevant Guidance for On-Road Testing of Prototype Automated Driving System (ADS)-Operated Vehicles

Scope

Recommended Practice providing safety-relevant guidance for on-road testing of prototype conditional, high, and full (SAE J3016 Levels 3–5) ADS-operated vehicles in mixed-traffic public-road environments, including in-vehicle fallback test driver (IFTD) training and oversight. Addresses the human fallback driver's role, readiness, and intervention during prototype testing; excludes evaluation of post-production ADS-equipped vehicles.
