Furthermore, subjective measures of sleepiness and mood failed to reflect these objective impairments, suggesting drivers may not accurately perceive their own fatigue levels under these conditions. The study concludes that the 34-hour restart provision is insufficient to restore performance when drivers experience circadian misalignment, such as night work followed by a shift to day schedules. The findings highlight that HOS regulations must account for circadian biology rather than relying solely on the duration of rest periods. The authors recommend adapting regulations to allow greater flexibility, such as incorporating strategic napping and considering circadian timing, to better manage driver fatigue and ensure optimal performance. This research provides empirical evidence that current regulatory frameworks may inadvertently permit impaired driving in scenarios involving shift work and rapid schedule transitions.
