Summary
This study evaluates the effects of three user interface (UI) design concepts—coherent, integrated, and context-dependent adaptable—on operators’ situation awareness (SA), task performance, and workload in nautical traffic management. The research was motivated by the shift in Dutch traffic management from local control to corridor management, which requires operators to process large amounts of information. Previous studies indicated that current systems insufficiently support perceptual and cognitive processes, and while new UI concepts were developed, their specific impacts on SA and performance remained unclear due to the complex interplay between these factors. The researchers conducted a within-subject experiment using a nautical traffic management simulator. Twenty operators, mostly experienced, performed three realistic traffic management scenarios using each of the three UI concepts in a counterbalanced order. The coherent UI provided a logical, consistent interface with separate windows for different data types. The integrated UI added features such as unified geographic maps, filtering capabilities, and interactive links between windows. The context-dependent adaptable UI included all integrated features plus automated adaptations, such as displaying alternative routes during obstructions and showing traffic prognoses when intensity limits were exceeded. Data collection involved objective performance measures (speed, accuracy, and execution of required actions), the Situation Awareness Global Assessment Technique (SAGAT) for SA measurement, and the Raw NASA Task Load Index (RTLX) for workload assessment. The results demonstrated that the integrated UI enabled operators to apply more effective information processing strategies, leading to improved task performance compared to the coherent UI. Specifically, the integrated features facilitated quicker access to relevant information, enhancing operators' ability to maintain SA. The context-dependent adaptable UI triggered proactive behavior in operators, resulting in superior task performance for tasks requiring insight into future environmental activities (Level-3 SA). However, the study found that the additional complexity of the context-dependent adaptable UI did not yield significantly better overall support than the integrated UI in all aspects, despite operators' preference for it. The integrated UI was sufficient to overcome many deficiencies of the coherent design without the higher implementation costs associated with the adaptable system. The findings suggest that while advanced, context-dependent adaptation can enhance proactive behavior and future-oriented SA, an integrated UI offers a robust balance of improved performance and practical feasibility. The study highlights that UI design significantly influences information processing strategies and SA maintenance. For dynamic task environments requiring time-constrained decisions, integrating information through unified maps and interactive elements provides substantial benefits. The results imply that system designers should prioritize integration features to support operators' cognitive processes, while carefully evaluating the necessity and cost-effectiveness of fully adaptable, context-dependent systems.
