Dependent measures included collision outcomes, response nature, response speed, and subjective perceptions. Results indicated that haptic characteristics significantly influenced driver perception but not driving performance. Drivers classified lower intensity cues as notifications and higher intensity cues as warnings. Vibration of the entire seat pan was perceived as more urgent than localized or moving patterns, though it failed to convey directional information. Conversely, specific patterns successfully communicated threat direction: vibration on the left side indicated a left threat, front-to-rear movement indicated a front threat, and right-to-left movement indicated a right threat. Intensity appeared to be a more critical factor in perception than inter-pulse interval. Notably, while drivers’ classifications of urgency and direction varied by cue, these perceptual differences did not translate into statistically significant differences in the speed, nature, or outcome of their avoidance responses. The study concludes that while haptic cues can effectively communicate urgency and direction to drivers, these perceptual advantages do not necessarily improve crash avoidance outcomes in this specific scenario. The findings suggest that intensity is a primary driver of perceived urgency, whereas directional patterns are effective for localizing threats. However, the lack of correlation between perceived urgency/direction and actual response metrics implies that further research is needed to determine which haptic characteristics truly enhance safety system effectiveness beyond subjective perception.
