Participants completed blocks with no music and blocks featuring preferred instrumental music at low, medium, and high tempos. Performance metrics included reaction time (RT) and accuracy, while mental workload was assessed using the Driver Assessment Load Index (DALI). Results indicated that background music significantly improved accuracy in the lane-change task across both single- and dual-task conditions without increasing reaction times. Specifically, music mitigated the accuracy costs typically associated with dual-task interference. Regarding tempo, higher tempo music significantly decreased reaction times for the lane-change task, but only in the long SOA condition; no such effect was observed in short SOA or single-task conditions. For the color-discrimination task, higher tempo music reduced reaction times across all conditions without affecting accuracy. Notably, participants’ perceived mental workload did not differ significantly across the various music and task conditions. These findings suggest that instrumental background music can enhance dual-task performance in driving scenarios, particularly by improving accuracy and, under specific temporal conditions, speeding up responses. The benefits are contingent on the timing between tasks, with high-tempo music facilitating faster lane changes when there is a sufficient gap between the cognitive and motor tasks. The study implies that background music may serve as a beneficial aid rather than a distraction in dual-task driving contexts, provided the music is instrumental and preferred by the driver.
