perceptual processing
The sensory and perceptual mechanisms that convert physical stimulation into usable percepts: detection, discrimination, feature extraction, perceptual organization, and the early encoding of visual, auditory, and other sensory input. This is the foundational, domain-general construct of how the senses build a representation of the world. Unlike working_memory (holding information after it is perceived) and executive_function (controlling cognition), this operates at the front-end sensory and perceptual stage; unlike individual_differences, it names a specific mechanism rather than between-person variation in ability.
