executive function

The cognitive control processes that regulate goal-directed behavior: inhibition (suppressing prepotent responses), task switching or shifting (reconfiguring between tasks or rules), and updating (monitoring and revising the contents of mind). This is the foundational, domain-general construct of supervisory control. Unlike working_memory, which is the capacity to hold and manipulate information, executive_function is the set of control operations that act on that information; unlike perceptual_processing, it operates above the level of sensory encoding; unlike individual_differences, it names a specific construct rather than between-person variation in general.
