working memory

The cognitive system for briefly holding and manipulating information that is no longer present: short-term maintenance, storage capacity limits, rehearsal, and the active workspace for ongoing mental operations. This is the foundational, domain-general construct of temporary information storage. Unlike executive_function, which is the control processes that direct cognition, working_memory is the limited-capacity buffer those processes operate on; unlike perceptual_processing, it holds information after it has been perceived; unlike individual_differences, it names a specific construct, not general between-person variation.
