Each warning had high and low intensity parameters (e.g., 1000 Hz vs. 400 Hz for sound; red vs. yellow text). The study employed three conditions across eight TOR trials: a "weak" condition (all low intensity), a "combination" condition (varying intensity per trial), and a "switch" condition (mostly low intensity with high intensity at trials 3 and 6). Physiological responses were measured via skin conductance (SC) recorded from the left foot, while psychological responses were assessed through subjective questionnaires completed after each trial. Results indicated that all drivers successfully switched to manual control after the TORs. No significant physiological habituation was observed in SC data across any condition, suggesting that physiological responses remained stable over the short duration of the experiment. However, significant psychological habituation was evident in the subjective data. In the weak condition, tension ratings dropped significantly from the third trial onward. In the combination and switch conditions, significant decreases in tension occurred from the fifth trial, though the switch condition showed no significant drop during the high-intensity trials (3 and 6). Participants in the combination condition generally reported higher tension levels than those in the switch condition. The findings suggest that psychological habituation occurs more rapidly than physiological habituation, particularly when warnings are monotonous and low-intensity. While varying warning intensities or patterns can temporarily delay habituation, it does not eliminate it. The study concludes that modifying TOR presentation methods is effective for short-term engagement but that long-term habituation remains a risk. Future research should increase the number of experimental trials to better capture physiological habituation and explore more diverse warning patterns to sustain driver attention over extended periods.
