Additionally, participants completed two test drives at a research facility; the second drive included a "surprise obstacle event" where a rigid image of a small child appeared behind the vehicle as the driver backed out of a garage bay. The results demonstrated that RV systems significantly improved crash avoidance in the staged obstacle event. Participants with an RV system experienced a 28 percent reduction in crashes compared to those without a system. Specifically, 100 percent of participants in the "no system" group crashed, whereas only 58 percent of the "RV only" group and 85 percent of the "RV & RPS" group crashed. Crucially, only participants who glanced at the RV display more than once avoided the obstacle. In naturalistic driving, drivers with RV systems spent 8 to 12 percent of backing time looking at the display, making at least one glance in approximately 65 percent of backing events. Conversely, the RPS provided little benefit in the staged event, as only five of the 13 participants in that group received a warning, and four of those still crashed. Furthermore, the presence of an RV system did not significantly alter drivers' backing speed or acceleration in either naturalistic or staged conditions. The study concludes that while drivers do utilize RV systems, their usage is inconsistent and often insufficient to prevent all collisions, partly due to system latency and infrequent glances. The findings suggest that RV systems are a valuable tool for detecting rear obstacles but require driver initiative. The authors recommend that future guidance should encourage drivers to make multiple glances at the RV display throughout the backing maneuver rather than relying on a single initial check or on sensor alerts, which proved unreliable for detecting small objects.
