peripheral attention

Peripheral visual attention: the covert allocation of attention to and processing of information in peripheral (extrafoveal) vision while driving — detecting motion, vehicles, or hazards away from the point of fixation without necessarily moving the eyes. Processing OUTSIDE the fovea, distinct from eye_movements_scanning (overt foveal gaze shifts), useful_field_of_view (a standardized timed test of attentional breadth), and looked_but_failed_to_see (a failure occurring at the fixated location rather than in the periphery).
